After its introduction in 1998, there's a reason IWC left the Portugieser Chronograph unchanged for the next two decades: don't mess with success. Sure, it's large – a 41mm diameter and slim bezel mean it wears big .The IWC-manufactured 82200 calibre powers this timepiece. This robust, high-quality automatic movement has a Pellaton winding system with components made of virtually non-wearing ceramic, which builds up a power reserve of 60 hours.
The story starts with two Portuguese businessmen who told IWC they were looking for a large wristwatch that could keep time with the accuracy of a ship’s chronometer. IWC responded by filling a 41.5-mm-diameter steel case with Caliber 74H4, which was originally used in pocketwatches and is more than 38 mm in diameter.This timepiece is powered by an IWC-manufactured movement from the 52000-calibre family, featuring a solid 5N gold rotor and blued screws.
